John Carmack is a computer programmer and technology entrepreneur who is known for his contributions to the field of computer graphics and video game development. He is best known for co-founding id Software, a video game development studio that produced popular games such as Doom and Quake. Carmack is also known for his work in the field of virtual reality (VR) technology and was the chief technology officer of Oculus, a company that developed VR headsets that were later acquired by Facebook. John Carmack, a virtual reality technology pioneer and former chief technology officer at Oculus, is leaving Meta after eight years with the company. In an internal post, Carmack criticized Meta's effectiveness and said that despite having a lot of people and resources, the company was constantly self-sabotaging and squandering effort. Carmack had been working part-time for Meta in recent years and was known for internal posts that criticized the company's decision-making and direction. Meta's earnings have been impacted by its focus on the metaverse and slowing growth in social networking and digital advertising, leading to the company laying off approximately 13% of its workforce. Carmack expressed his belief that Meta is the company best positioned to bring value to the world through virtual reality, but said he had "wearied of the fight" and would be focusing on his own startup, Keen Technologies.
